One Room Challenge: Week 1

Here we go! I did it.

I signed up for the One Room Challenge. I am beyond excited to participate. Welcome to week one! Let me give you a little information about how the challenge works. The long and short of it is I have 8 weeks to knock out a complete redesign of any room. Every year designers have 2 chances to participate in the challenge to redesign one room from top to bottom. Once in the Fall and once in the Spring. Every Thursday designers and DIYers post on their blogs and social about their progress and you can find them all in the One Room Challenge blog. Once you are done here please click on over and check all of the other amazing rooms. Participants range from newbies like me to seasoned pros.

Are you nervous? Because I am.

Well a few months ago I asked everyone on Instagram what our next project should be and there was a pretty obvious answer…at least according to those that answered my poll. 53% of you guys voted to change our back porch into a screened in porch. The One Room Challenge allows participants to redesign an outside space which makes this the perfect time to get started and continue our journey transforming our builder—grade to tailor—made through DIY, fun design, and a LOT of hard work.

Rockwell, our dog, wanted to pose for the before photo. It’s a decent porch but nothing special…yet.

So let’s get into it. Jorge, my husband, and I sat down and created a mood board. We wanted to make sure we had a clear vision on the interior design style, DIY projects needed, and general vibe of the room would be.

We are planning to do most of the work ourselves. We have some cool projects planned that will be either easy for you guys to try out, or just fun to watch us flounder a bit ; ).

Projects (not listed in any order)

  • Tiling Floor

  • Porch Swing

  • Sliding Screen Door

  • Railing (with a special design)

  • Screening in the porch (duh)

Throughout the process I will check back in here on the blog and on Instagram. So be sure to follow me there if you don’t already. More to come next week!

What do you think of the mood board? Can we pull this off in 8 weeks? I don’t know, but I am so excited to try. I can’t wait to spend this quality time with my husband transforming our builder—grade to tailor—made just for us.
