One Room Challenge: Week 2

I think this is the part where I remind all of you that I have entered the One Room Challenge and I am redesigning my back porch. I am turning the builder-grade porch into a tailor-made screened in oasis just in time for the Fall. This week has been slow as far as progress is concerned. And by slow, I mean, the work isn’t as visible as I would like it to be outside on the actual porch. We have worked on the organizational side of this project. My husband, who many think of as the unorganized one, is actually very organized when it comes to planning. Some, mostly me, would say too organized. I like to get started. Jump in. Jorge on the other hand wants to take it slow in the early stages. Just the right amount of procrastination. When they say opposites attract…Jorge and I are perfect examples in life, in marriage, and in this DIY business.

However, our planning has pushed us forward. We have four railing designs to choose from. There are pros and cons to each one. Let’s explore.

OPEN CONCEPT

This option gives us the best view from the porch. To be honest though I wanted to install breezy white curtains, so I am not as worried about being able to see out into the backyard. I am looking for an option that adds to the natural design of the home. The Open Concept is also the easiest system to install.

BASIC RAILING

This is a classic. It’s not hard to install and most home improvement stores sell supplies for this style. Adding a railing like this or the next two options helps keep our screen intact since we have pets.

CRAFTSMAN STYLE

This version adds a little more detail while still keeping the pattern pretty simple. Our house is meant to have some “builder-grade” craftsman detail, and I think this genuinely adds to the craftsman style of our home.

HERRING-BONE-ESQUE

Girl she is fancy. This railing design adds glamour and makes a splash with the intricate wood pattern. A version of this pattern already exists within our home on our dining room wall. This would be the hardest design to make and the most time consuming.

How do we decide? All four are great choices. Well, we decided to put it to a vote. Social media spoke…And I guess you guys will have to follow along to see which one we decided to tackle. Follow us on social media for more details, in process videos and help us decide on bigger questions like the railings.

Wish us luck! If you want to check out other peoples designs and room transformations head on over to the One Room Challenge Blog. They have so many different designers participating this year!
